Misleading Prices in Dentistry

Dr. Edmond O’Flaherty

More and more clinics are deliberately confusing the public by publishing inaccurate pricing. One of the worst offenders is a clinic in Hungary, they can be very ‘creative’ with their pricing.

An example of this is a dental implant. For most people being handed a metal screw isn`t much use to them. What they are looking for is a tooth. This clinic gives a fee for the metal part, a fee for the post that connects into it, a fee for the surgery, a fee for the sedation, a fee for the crown, a fee for bite registration  and the list goes on. They only tell the whole fee when you arrive! After paying for flights, accommodation and booking time off work, the whole fee should be communicated to patients before they actually arrive at the clinic.

When you are in the high-pressure situation with the sales rep beside you, you may feel a little helpless and pressure to go ahead after flying all the way out there. You may soon be told you need 20 crowns and are saving a fortune. You can often be told you need root canals on 20 teeth with posts, but that you are saving money on the cost of the procedure. Patients can leave clinics abroad with nearly every tooth filled and crowned, whether it is really needed or not.

If you are considering going abroad for dental word, make sure you get a realistic quote from the dentist and make sure that what you are getting, is actually needed.
